Hi Elna,

Thanks for having a big heart and adopting the Orphaned Profiles. This After Adopting Orphans FAQ explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need.

Let me know if you have any questions on how to find and record sources, merge duplicates, clean up gedcom biographies, and interpret the Suggestions report. I'm here to help!

Hi Elna, I received this message from you: "Schalk-82's parents cannot be the same as van_der_Merwe-49. They have the same grandson Burger-933 (this must be incorrect - no such profile exists according to WikiTree). Schalk-82 is the mother of Burger-933's Father and van_der_Merwe-49 is the father of the mother of Burger-933 and they they share the same parents. Something is weird here his Grandmother on his father's side is the sister of his grandfather on his mother's side Could that be correct?" The answer is: could be and could be not; there was a lot of cousins marrying cousins and also generational conflatory mistakes made in past genealogies. I'm still painstakingly working through some issues. See the comments here and the research done here Van_der_Merven-5 (this is the master profile - see the bio). It takes a lot of time; and there are many mistakes. This is also the reason when profiles are validated, Profile Protection include the parent- spousal and child connections.

What you could do to help is to post to the comment boxes primary sources (including links to) to support claims and to facilitate validation. Please do not disconnect and / or re-connect without collaboration with the project leadership though. And many thanks for bringing this issue under my attention.

Hi Elna

As you have been a member of WikiTree for a few weeks now I thought I would check in to see how you are getting on with the site.

Has the New Member How-To been helpful or left you with any questions?

I am here to help with any problems or queries you may have. To contact me, reply to this comment, or click the link to my name and then send a private message or post a comment on my profile page.

Sometimes links don't work in emails. If that's happened to you, check the public comments on your profile. The links will work from there.

Hi Elna,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Thanks for signing the Honor Code, Elna. I hope you discover as much about your family as I have about mine over the last several years.

One of our mentors created a tutorial for the GEDCOMpare process that I found very helpful. I hope that you will too.

If you have any questions about how WikiTree works, let us know by using the "reply" link under our comments or by clicking our names to visit our profiles. From there you can leave a comment or send a private message.

Hi Elna, a warm welcome to WikiTree! Many / most of the South African genealogical lines and profiles of the eigtheenth and seventeenth periods (and earlier) have already been made. Many have also been validated with primary sources.

A few handy links to get you started:

  1. Getting Started
  2. Adding to WikiTree.
  3. Pre-1700 Quiz (self-certifying in order to understand better how to do pre-1700 genealogical work on WikiTree)
  4. What are duplicates? Why should and how can they be avoided?
  5. G2G Help - for any questions you may have ....

Perhaps you would like to join the South African Roots Project ? Besides links to sources, there are help pages that might also be useful.

Welcome

I am pleased to confirm you as a member, and welcome you to the WikiTree family, your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

I would suggest starting with the How-to pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site

Happy tree climbing
